The Cosmelan® intensive skin therapy is one of the most effective lightening therapies available on the market. It should be performed under the supervision of a dermatologist. The main indications for the therapy include brown spots caused by hormonal changes (melasma, chloasma). The therapy also helps improve the general condition of the skin with the symptoms of ageing (reduces wrinkles, dilated pores and fine pigmented lesions). The entire therapy comprises two stages: a peeling and lightening treatment performed in the surgery, and post-treatment procedures to be observed at home. Follow-up visits at the dermatologist who performed the treatment should take place 8, 15 and 30 days after the beginning of the therapy. The Cosmelan® therapy is appropriate for all skin phototypes and can be performed irrespective of the season. Controlled clinical trials with the participation of subjects who underwent the therapy confirmed that in 99% of cases the intensity of brown spot pigmentation was reduced by 95%. During the therapy, the patient must not use any other skin lightening or peeling products. It is also recommended to refrain from other intensive cosmetic treatments (e.g. mechanical cleansing of the skin, microdermabrasion, facial depilation etc.). Throughout the therapy and immediately after its completion, the patient should avoid exposure to direct sunlight, and use a high factor sunscreen (SPF 50+).
Usually on the second day of the therapy slight swelling and intense skin redness combined with a burning sensation and tautness occurs on the sites treated with the lightening products. The symptoms can last for the first 2-4 weeks of treatment. After a few days, skin peeling with different intensity will also develop, which can interfere with the application of make-up. In rare cases, crust can form on the surface of the treated skin in the most sensitive areas such as the nasolabial folds.
Throughout the Cosmelan® therapy, the patient is constantly supervised by the dermatologist, who can be consulted personally or on the phone, should any questions or problems arise. The dermatologist is obliged to discuss the details of the therapy with the patient and to schedule the follow-up visits.
